Music for me started...
Music for me started at a super young age. My dad was a drummer in a few rock bands, so we had a kit set up in our living room as far back as I can remember. I loved hearing him play. Three year old me would yell, "Play dums dad!" and it wasn't long before he sat me on the throne and started letting me bang out a beat myself.
My mom was also musical, she was and still is a fantastic singer, and she also plays the piano phenomenally for someone who never took lessons.
When people tell me I have a great sense of timing, I attribute that to my dad, and when people compliment me on my voice, I'd have to give that to my mom (she was the one who forced me to sing in the church choir after all!).
I grew up playing and singing in church; there was always a need for some instrument on a Sunday morning, and I was always willing. Singing and playing at the same time was harder, that came later, but I always had a bit of a knack for anything musical. I recorded my first "song" in Grade 8 with a 1/4" to USB cable I bought for $40 (a lot of money to a grade eight kid), but I really started writing when I was nearing high school graduation. I worked late shifts at a sports store 45 minutes from my house, so by the time I'd get home, I'd be wired and stay up with my guitar for sometimes hours, learning covers, and writing songs.
I always did music for fun, I honestly never thought I had any special talents (I know I'm lucky, but sometimes I still think that way when I see some of my favourite artists play). When I got to university, I would play in my dorm room and get compliments on my songs. People always encouraged me to play, so I would, and I began to write more as well. Finally, in 2014 I decided to start taking myself seriously as a musician; I started learning more, writing more, and eventually, recording. It took nearly two years for me to do First Name Basis from start to finish, we put so much work into it, but I knew it was only the start. At the time of writing I've released Wait For Me and I couldn't be happier with how it sounds. I'm really excited for the next chapter in my musical journey, I'm making more music in 2019, and I can't wait to share it with you all! I am really thankful and appreciate every one of you who have chosen to listen to my music and keep up with my journey.
